Step One

Gypsum, acrylic and iron cast sculpture

I have a weird obsession with steps, and I’ve been drawing/painting these things for years – and decided last year (2022) to try and make something tangible.

After several failed attempts I found a process that works: I print a 3D model to create a silicone mould; which I then fill with Jesmonite (an acrylic/gypsum composite that looks and feels like stone) mixed with iron shavings. Once set, the piece is scrubbed down with an acid etch to bring out the texture – and left for a few months while the iron shavings oxidize/rust.

I’m very happy with the outcome. I’m working on two further shapes (step two and three) and currently trying to grow moss on them.
